Welcome!
The Byrne Family First-Year Seminar Program connects first-year students to prominent professors right from the beginning of their adventure at Rutgers. Designed to welcome you to a freedom of learning, the seminars have no letter grades and no formal exams. These seminars are small, one-credit courses, limited to 20 students, and they meet for 10 weeks.Byrne Seminars offer you the chance to experience the excitement of original research as senior faculty members share their curiosity, their intellectual passion, and how they develop new ideas and fields of knowledge. You, in turn, can test your ideas and learn from others in lively discussions. Find your special interest or explore majors you may not have considered! Some seminars also travel to New York City and Philadelphia museums and events, share meals, or visit sites around New Jersey. You may register for a one-credit seminar in addition to the 12-15 credit standard course-load; the seminars are not meant to compete with your other classes. Fall 2008 Course Offerings: To see the dates and times the seminars are offered, click through to the section/index numbers listed below each course description. Pre-registration: Most students indicated their top three preferences when they attended academic orientation (usually in May or June). Our goal is to place you in your first preference; but if we can’t place you in any of your three choices, you will not be enrolled in any Byrne Seminar. Starting at the end of July, you can go online, see what seminars are open, and pre-register at that time. If you did not yet pre-register, you may do so now by filling out the online Registration Form. Late Registration: When incoming first-year students arrive on campus for fall 2008, they may register directly, during week one only, through the Web Registration System in any seminar that still has openings. For questions regarding the Byrne Seminars, e-mail Kathleen Hull or call 732-932-8273. |
