Scheduling Time/Location of Your Seminar
To identify when and where you'd like to offer your seminar, please communicate with Beth Nehlsen, our Scheduling Officer. We encourage you to find conference rooms and other meeting rooms that are not normally used for undergraduate teaching, through your department. This relieves pressure for space across the university, while giving students an intimate learning experience. Keep in mind that you may have as many as 20 students in your class. In a few cases, we "cap" the enrollment at a lower number to accommodate room space. You may e-mail Beth or call her at 732-932-2572, ext. 1209. How Long do the Seminars Run? Typically, Byrne Seminars meet 10 times for 80 minutes. In the fall 2009, seminars will start in the SECOND week of classes. Since we promise our first-year students that their seminars will not conflict with other course demands at the end of the term, please make sure that all student work is handed in by the end of November. In the spring, it's all over by about April 1. In some special cases (e.g., lab-based seminars or seminars that involve weekly travels), faculty members decide to offer a seminar that meets only 5 times for 160 minutes. We don't encourage this for several reasons. First, it's difficult for Rutgers Scheduling to find rooms available for double sessions; and it's difficult (virtually impossible for Engineering, Pharmacy, and Mason Gross students) for students to find time in their busy schedules for a double-session Seminar. Let's open the doors to as many students as possible. What If I Have to Go to a Conference During the Semester? Tell Beth if you plan to be away from campus during the term so she can put the exact dates of your seminar online for students to see. |
